‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Earns Top Score for 2023 Box Office

Discover why moviegoers said “Let’s – a go” to the kid-friendly film.

It was an easy win for the “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at the weekend box office. The animated video game film adaptation – a collaboration between Illumination, Nintendo and Universal – opened to $204.6 million in its first five days at the domestic box office. It also brought in a record-breaking $375.6 million globally. These figures were enough to land the film the best opening of 2023 to date, the best opening ever for a movie based on a video game, and the best ever global launch for an animated pic.

“This is one of the biggest box office over-performances in recent memory and is absolutely shattering all pre-release projections,” says Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “Mario officially says ‘game over’ to the video game movie adaptation curse.”

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the nostalgic and family-friendly film was surely powered by its all-star cast. Chris Pratt stars as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong.

“A winner for families.” Variety

The film’s premise follows the mustachioed Brooklyn-based plumber brothers as they get sucked into the mystical Mushroom Kingdom and try to stop the nefarious, all-powerful King Koopa from completing his plans for world domination.

The PG pic was a hit with audiences, currently holding a 97 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “A” CinemaScore.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is playing in theaters now and will be available for licensing from Swank soon.
