"Dune"
Warner Bros.’ “Dune” brought home the most wins (6) last night, including Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects. This spellbinding adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel tells the story of Paul Atreides and his mythic hero’s journey. The film included top talents such as Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac. Real-life fan of the book and director of the film, Denis Villeneuve said “Dune” was his dream project, and he kept the book by his side while shooting to get all of the little details right.
"Belfast"
This film from Focus Features won Best Original Screenplay. It’s been a frontrunner for the Oscars since it debuted. Director Kenneth Branagh created a memoir, mirroring his own experience, of growing up during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. “This is an enormous honor for my family and a great tribute to an amazing city and fantastic people. This is the search for joy and hope in the face of violence and loss,” said Branagh.
"King Richard"
This Warner Bros.’ film chronicled the lives of the Williams family, including tennis players Venus and Serena and their father, Richard. Despite some drama earlier in the ceremony, Will Smith was honored for his incredible portrayal of this determined father to help his daughters to greatness. The film was a big crowd-pleaser. Critic Justin Chang said, “[this film is] an engrossing family drama that doubles as a sharp rethink of how a family operates within the overlapping, often overbearing spheres of race, class, sports and celebrity.”
"No Time to Die"
The latest James Bond film was actor Daniel Craig’s last performance in the franchise. It was also significant as the 60th anniversary of James Bond, which the Oscars noted with a highlights reel and introduction by sports legends. The film won Best Original Song. Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas, gave a powerful performance of the song during the Oscars ceremony, despite the fact that the two may have been the youngest composers to write a Bond theme song.
"Encanto"
Disney’s flick won Best Animated Feature, and the film has enjoyed a cult following from families across the world. “Encanto” is Disney’s first full-length animated movie to take place in Colombia, and many of the cast members are also Colombia. The “Encanto” soundtrack from Lin-Manuel Miranda has also topped musical charts, including hit “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” During the 2022 Oscars show, the first-ever live performance of this nominated song was a big hit, bringing the magic to life with colorful costumes and dance numbers.
"Cruella"
Jenny Beavan brought home the win for Best Costume Design. During her acceptance speech, she mentioned that she nearly said no to the role, but credited her amazing team for making the incredible designs possible in a short amount of time. The film tells the origin story of Cruella de Vil with a splash of sass from lead actress Emma Stone and fantastic fashion. It is the third live-action adaption of the 101 Dalmations franchise.
"Summer of Soul"
This film - part music film, part historical record - won Best Documentary Feature at this year’s ceremony. It chronicles the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969 and includes concert performances by big names such as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & The Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more.
This title is covered by the annual license and is available now. We’re currently working to add it to the website.
"The Eyes of Tammy Faye"
Jessica Chastain won the Oscar for best actress in a leading role, and the film also took home a win for best makeup and hairstyling. She was completely transformed as she portrayed the televangelist over the course of 30 years in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” According to an interview with the film’s creative team in Variety, “Jessica’s total time in [makeup, hair, costume and special effects] was four hours.”
"West Side Story"
Ariana DeBose won best supporting actress in this film by 20th Century Studios. Her win is historic as the first openly queer woman of color to take home an Oscar. DeBose credited Rita Moreno for paving the path for her and others; Moreno won the Oscar for playing the same role, Anita, in the 1962 version of the film. At the time, Moreno became the first Hispanic woman to win an Oscar. The 2021 remake of this popular film is directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tony Kushner.
