‘Eternals’ Earns No. 1 Opening

Disney and Marvel’s “Eternals” premiered in theaters over the weekend, earning an estimated $71 million domestic opening and a $161.7 million global total. That’s the second best opening for a Hollywood movie this year.

The film, directed by Oscar-winning Chloe Zhao, received critical praise for its inclusive casting and stunning visuals. Empire Magazine wrote, “Director Chloe Zhao’s entry into the superhero world is assured, ambitious and told on a dizzying cosmic scale.” USA Today shared, “Utilizing Zhao’s penchant for naturalistic environments, ‘Eternals’ looks unlike any other Marvel movie and is perhaps the most welcoming for MCU neophytes in forever.”

The film revolves around a group of immortal, gifted beings that were sent to Earth by cosmic Celestials to protect humans from dangerous alien predators known as Deviants. Arriving in Mesopotamia in 5000 B.C., the group of superheroes ultimately wipe out the Deviants over several millennia and then go their separate ways as they await their next orders. Fast forward to present day, and a more evolved group of Deviants reappear forcing the Eternals to reunite and face new truths regarding their role on Earth.

The star-studded ensemble cast features Angelina Jolie, as warrior Thena, Salma Hayek, the group’s leader Ajak, Gemma Chan, an empathetic hero who has the power to transform matter, Richard Madden, as flying, laser-beam eyed Ikaris, Don Lee, as strongman Gilgamesh, Kumail Nanjiani, a Bollywood star named Kingo who can hurl firebombs with his hands, Brian Tyree Henry, as techno-savant inventor Phastos, Barry Keoghan, as mind-controller Druig, Lauren Ridloff, as deaf speedster Makkari, and Lia McHugh, as illusion-creating preteen Sprite. Kit Harrington also stars as Sersi’s boyfriend.

The film currently holds an 80 percent audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
