6 Lessons Learned from Top Holiday Films

Cozying up to watch a festive film is one of the most popular holiday traditions, but this wintertime activity is more than just delightful entertainment. Usually decked out with loads of positivity and cheer, these six movies contain an underlying message anyone – young and old – can learn from this holiday season. Share one – or more – of these festive movies with your school community to help celebrate the most wonderful time of the year!

We all matter: “It’s A Wonderful Life”

This comedy-drama features a down-in-the-dumps businessman who is shown what life would be like if he never existed, helping him realize the positive impact he’s had on the world. One of the most beloved films of all time, the story of George Bailey demonstrates that our influence on the world – and the people in it – is most likely greater than we realize.

Find the good everywhere: “Elf”

Buddy grew up in the North Pole thinking he was an elf until full-grown adulthood. Once he learns the truth, he travels to New York City in search of his biological father, a man who isn’t thrilled to learn he has another son. He also encounters many challenges – and some Cotton-Headed Ninnymuggins – but never loses his positivity and love for spreading Christmas cheer. Take a page out of Buddy’s storybook and try to find the good in everyone and everything – even angry elves!

Never give up: “A Christmas Story”

All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun, but everyone – including Santa – says “you’ll shoot your eye out!” He could have given up and settled for another toy, but Ralphie is determined to get the present he really wants. And, in the end, his perseverance pays off! Whatever your goals or dreams are, nothing is unattainable as long as you persevere.

Be brave: “The Star”

This nativity story is centered on a donkey named Bo and his animal friends who – because of their courage and bravery – become accidental heroes in “the greatest story ever told.” Share the message that you don’t need to be powerful or important to make a big difference, you just need a little courage.

Always choose forgiveness: “A Christmas Carol”

Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge has to go through a lot to learn that holding on to grudges is just not worth it. Take the lesson he learns to heart by releasing any negative energy you might have that could be weighing you down. You’ll feel a lot better and be a lot happier – just like Scrooge!

The holidays are about family: "Almost Christmas"

Even a dysfunctional family, reuniting for the first time after their mom’s passing, knows the holidays are about spending time with those you cherish the most. Show this film as a reminder to focus on surrounding yourself with loved ones this holiday season – not presents and tasty seasonal treats.
