Synopsis
Marie (Best Actress nominee Norma Shearer), an Austrian princess, is forced to marry the Dauphin of France and becomes embroiled in court intrigue between her father-in-law and the Duke of Orleans. When the Dauphin is unable to consummate the marriage, Marie begins an affair, but her lover ends their tryst when the king dies and Marie becomes queen. She decides to do her best as a monarch, but the Duke of Orleans continues to foment revolution against the new King.
